Know what features to look for when choosing a senior friendly easy to use cell phone for your elderly parent.

Buying a cell phone for elderly parents is a great way to know you can reach them at any time, no matter where they are. There are many reasons for an elderly parent to have a cell phone. For me, buying a cell phone for my 80 year old father meant I could leave the house, knowing that if he had a problem or needed me for anything, he could simply call and I would head straight home if necessary.

What to Look for When Choosing a Senior Friendly Cell Phone

Deciding which cell phone to buy is very important since you want to be sure your elderly parent will be able to see the buttons clearly, be able to hear the cell phone ring, be able to hear the caller clearly and be able to understand the basic call making and call answering functions of the phone.

My dad is extremely hard of hearing, has poor eyesight, and he had never owned or operated a cell phone before in his life. I had my work cut out for me when it came to buying a phone I could be sure he would be able to use easily. Below is a list of features I knew any phone I bought for my dad was going to have to have.

  • Large Button Phones – many seniors have arthritic fingers or hands, have shaky hands, and or poor eyesight. A phone with large buttons will make the cell phone easier for an elderly parent to see and use.
  • Loud Ringer – since I knew my dad would likely carry his phone in his pants pocket, it was absolutely necessary that the phone I chose have a very loud ringer setting.
  • Adjustable Talk Volume – there is nothing worse for a senior than to answer the phone and not be able to clearly hear the caller. I made certain the phone I chose for my dad had an adjustable volume setting that I could set at its highest level.
  • 1 Button Calling – the phone I finally chose for my dad has 3 large programmable buttons located right under the screen.

While the 1 button calling was not in my original list of necessary features, once I realized how handy this would be for my dad, I was really glad his phone offered this characteristic. I made use of this senior friendly feature in the following way: I programmed my elder brother’s cell phone number under the 1st button, my cell phone number under the 2nd button, and my younger sister’s number under the 3rd button. I then explained to my dad that if he wanted to call his 1st born child, use the number 1 button, if he wanted to call me, his number 2 child, then use the 2nd button, and so on. It made it very easy for him to remember.

The phone I bought for my dad also had a nice bonus feature I wasn't expecting. On each of the three programmable buttons, I was able to attach a photo of my brother, myself and my sister. So, whichever person my dad was calling, their photo would show onscreen, and he would know by looking at the picture that he was in fact calling the person he intended to call.

Recommended Easy to Use Cell Phones for Seniors

The senior friendly cell phone I finally settled on for my dad was the Pantech C520 Breeze. It has been a great phone for my dad and it filled all my requirements for an easy to use and senior-friendly cell phone. A few other phones I considered and would recommend are listed below.

  • LG UX 280 – this basic phone features big buttons and a large display.
  • Samsung Jitterbug J SPH-A310 – this phone features a large, easy-to-read display, simple to use menus, bluetooth connectivity, and it includes roadside assistance.
  • Doro PhoneEasy 410 – this phone has a bright display with a large fonts, a large keypad with big buttons and good call quality.

Find an Easy to Use Cell Phone for Your Elderly Parent

Finding the perfect senior friendly cell phone for your elderly parent isn’t difficult if you have a basic idea of what features you think your parent will need. Once you have decided on and purchased a cell phone for aging parents, be sure and take the needed time to teach them how to use it.

My dad was able to go from completely cell phone illiterate to a proficient cell phone user in a very short amount of time.

I have been searching for a cell phone for my grandmother for a long time. We have always had difficulty finding one that fits her needs. I finally found something that was suitable to her needs and worthwhile. The SVC (Senior Value Cell phone) from TracFone is a phone tailored for the elderly. The phones have oversized lighted keys, which make it simple to read, hearing aid compatibility, and no contracts! They can get a cell phone for under about $20 and a plan for under $7 a month…that means we won’t be spending an arm and a leg on the phone!

The thing I loved the most about the Tracfone Senior Value cell phone was the emergency location assistance from 911 which is linked to the phone so if my parents have a breakdown in the middle of nowhere they can still be found. Active older folk who love to travel to strange places can give you grey hairs so I also love that they can phone from anywhere in the States on double minutes and tell us all their news!

You bought up some interesting points about 1 button calling and photo's coming up on the screen of the person calling - that is a very good idea. My mom bought herself a Tracfone T155G because it was essentially the cheapest phone for seniors for $14.99 with the lowest service rate per month of $6.66. The reception has been really good on the phone, it uses Verizons networks and you have to buy the 'double minutes for the life of the phone' plan to get maximum value for money.
The minutes and service days roll over so they don't get wasted and when I go overseas my mom can still phone me at the cost of a local call.
At least once your parents have a reliable phone you can have peace of mind knowing they can phone you anytime and you'll be there for them or if there is an emergency that they can get help from 911 emergency locate assist till you arrive.

Thanks for the great and encouraging comments. I am glad you found the information in the article helpful I also appreciate the added information about the Tracfone. It makes it so much less stressful when we can be assured our aging parents can reach us when they need to!

I hear ya loud and clear! (haha bad phone joke) But I do hear ya because my mom is 82 now and she was in the exact same boat as your dad. Except one of the biggest problems for me was that she loved going out, she was always out somewhere! It was like having a teenage daughter! Eventually I realized I should stop wishing she'd go out less, cause that's no fun, and just get her a cell phone. I went with one of the samsungs from svc and she picked it up pretty quickly. Now I can worry a little less when she leaves the house.

it is humbling to know that there are companies out there like TracFone that have got the customers best interests at heart - especially as one gets older, you need to be looked after that little bit extra :) when you grow old you really don't need to be paying an arm and a leg for all the technology and extra free minutes etc etc on a cell phone contract that you aren't even going to use half of each month. all you need is a basic cell phone with basic features so that you aren't housebound by having to rely on a landline as your only means of contact. with SVC you pay less than $20 for a phone and as little as $7 a month from then on - no contract involved!

great article. i had my own little problems finding the right phone for my dad... i got him the samsung t155 from tracfone, together with their senior value plan. i am with tracfone myself and have no complaints about anything, so i decided what works for me, will hopefully work for him too. it did not take him long to figure out how to use his new phone, all is nice and simple, and yes it also has the nice big screen and text.in addition it has the 911 emergency location assist.for me, apart from the real affordable price, $15 for the phone and $7 per month for the plan, it was also very important they he will have a reliable network coverage, and from my own experience i know that it is with tracfone.perfect for my dad and his needs, and more peace of mind for me

what i think???i agree with most of the other commentors, tracfone had a great idea and put it to work. with tracfone prepaid, and especially the senior value plan, tracfone are offering great value for money, a nice, simple and very affordable handset, and most important of all a very reliable network coverage that works nationwide. my thumbs are up for tracfone and it's senior value friendly prepaid plan. no point in having a phone if the network lets you down in an emergency

Nice article Kelly. Did you try out several of the phones or did you just pick base on their features? I see someone commented that the SVC comes with hearing aid compatibility. Anyone with experience from that? Like many in here I’m trying to help out my parents. My dad uses a hearing aid, and I’m thinking about just getting on phone that they both can share.

I've heard of SVC- senior value phone. Heard it was $7 a month and that it had great reception. Anyone have one or gave one to a parent? I want to get one for mine but prepaid makes me anxious.
